What product features should I look for when choosing cable & wire cutters?

When selecting a cable & wire cutters product, prioritize blade material (hardened steel or alloy), cutting capacity for the wire gauges you handle, ergonomic handles for comfort, corrosion resistance, and replaceable blades or jaws. Also consider insulation ratings if you’ll be cutting live wires, and whether the tool is rated for electrical work or general use.

Heavy-duty cable cutters are designed to cut larger diameters and tougher materials such as heavy-duty cable, steel wire rope and cable, or multi-stranded conductors. They typically feature reinforced jaws, longer handles for greater leverage, and thicker, hardened blades. Standard cutters are better suited for light-gauge electrical wire and small cables.

Cutting ACSR (aluminum conductor steel-reinforced) requires a tool rated for hard steel cores. Not all cable & wire cutters are suitable for ACSR; choose cutters specifically specified for ACSR or heavy-duty cable with hardened, precision-ground jaws to prevent nicking the aluminum or crushing the steel core.

Maintain cutter jaws by keeping them clean and lightly oiled to prevent rust, sharpening or replacing blades as recommended, and checking alignment and fasteners. Avoid cutting materials beyond the rated capacity to prevent jaw deformation. Store the tool in a dry place and periodically inspect for chips, cracks, or wear.

To determine the ideal cutter, measure the diameter and type of wire rope and cable you will cut, and check the tool’s maximum cutting capacity in the manufacturer’s specifications. For thicker wire rope and multi-conductor cables, use heavy-duty or bolt cutter-style cable cutters. For small to medium cables, ratcheting or compound-action cutters often provide clean cuts with less effort.

While bolt cutters and heavy-duty cable cutters can cut through insulated wires, they may damage insulation if not designed for electrical work. For insulated electrical wires, use insulated-handled wire cutters rated for electrical use to protect the conductor and ensure safety. If cutting both insulated and non-insulated materials, choose a versatile tool that specifies safe use for insulation.
